Don Beyer’s campaign for the Democratic nomination to succeed Rep. Jim Moran got a boost this week as Beyer won a straw poll conducted at Rep. Gerry Connolly’s annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration. Attendees cast their votes in a straw poll measuring support among the 11 candidates seeking the Democratic nomination to succeed the retiring Moran as Virginia’s 8th District congressman. Beyer topped the field, with 34 percent of the vote.
Don Beyer won the annual St. Patrick’s Day straw poll tonight, garnering 35 percent of the vote in a 12-way competition. "With such fine progressive Democrats running I am humbled by this show of support from so many of my Democratic friends,” Beyer said. “Of course, the only vote that matters is the one on June 10th."
Don Beyer today called for closing the health care “coverage gap” in Virginia by expanding Medicaid coverage to hundreds of thousands of uninsured Virginians through a federal/state partnership. He pledged that as a member of Congress he would demand that the federal government uphold its end of the bargain, and referenced an earlier cooperative effort – one that brought health care to thousands of Virginia children -- as a model for reaching agreement on the current proposal.
