Beyer Denounces Ryan Medicare Proposal

April 11, 2014 (Alexandria, VA) – Former Lieutenant Governor and congressional candidate Don Beyer criticized the budget proposal put forward by Rep. Paul Ryan, saying it was irresponsible on many fronts and would be especially harmful to Medicare.

“I oppose the Ryan budget plan to end traditional Medicare and turn it into a voucher system,” Beyer said.  “This privatization would not have the guarantees of today’s Medicare and it would hurt people 55 and older, including those currently enrolled in today’s Medicare.  Private health insurers could structure their plan to attract the youngest and healthiest seniors.  And many seniors would pay more for prescription drugs.”

Beyer also noted that the proposed budget is especially hard on middle and lower-income people, and on women.  The plan, for example, cuts school lunch and children’s nutrition programs, as well as many programs that disproportionately affect women, such as Supplemental Security Income and housing vouchers.
