Beyer Launches ‘Around the 8th in 80 Days’ Campaign

August 16, 2014 (Alexandria, VA) – Taking a page from Jules Verne’s Around the World in 80 Days, former Lieutenant Governor Don Beyer kicked off the last 80 days of his campaign for Virginia’s 8th congressional seat this morning at Arlington’s Quincy Park.

Beyer announced his plan to listen to and learn from the citizens of the 8th district – one of the nations most educated and engaged communities.

“This campaign is about ideas and optimism,” Beyer said. “To paraphrase Jules Verne, ‘Anything one person can imagine, others can make real.’ “

The local businessman announced the many events, policy forums and meet-and-greets the campaign has planned on the road to November 4th, beginning with Women for Beyer.

After the primary victory, Beyer asked Delegate Charniele Herring to serve as Honorary Chair of Women for Beyer. At the event, Herring announced the campaign now has over 1,000 women signed up to participate in events, ranging from a September 17th forum on women’s economic issues to an October 10th book party with best-selling author Susan Jane Gilman.

Iraq veteran Terron Sims, an expert on veterans and military families and a member of the Beyer Advisory Group on veterans’ issues, announced the formation of Beyer’s five advisory groups, each comprised of experts and grassroots leaders from a variety of fields, who will brief Beyer and voters at weekly ideas forums.

The Animal Welfare League of Arlington’s spokeswoman Keelee Wrenn joined Beyer at the park to announce a September 3rd Doggy Happy Hour at Hotel Monaco in Alexandria, with local dog trainer Bobby Mahoney, to benefit the Humane Society shelter.

Finally, Beyer pledged his utmost support to all Democratic candidates in Northern Virginia.

“From Rip Sullivan to John Foust to Mark Warner, this is a campaign of teamwork,” said Beyer, as he urged his supporters to join Sullivan’s GOTV canvass ahead of Tuesday’s special election for state delegate.

Beyer supporters of all ages enjoyed the day in the park with ice cream sundaes and music. As the music wrapped, Beyer left to being his tour of the 8th – not in a hot air balloon, but in a 2012 Volvo station wagon.

Don Beyer is the Democratic nominee for Virginia’s 8th District seat in Congress. He has run a successful Northern Virginia business for over 40 years, served two terms as Virginia’s Lieutenant Governor, and was appointed President Obama’s Ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein.
