Happy Earth Day!
Happy Earth Day! I celebrated by signing up for Capital Bikeshare this morning! It’s a healthy, convenient way to travel in and around Virginia’s 8th District while keeping your carbon footprint down.
How will you be celebrating Earth Day?
My first goal, if elected to serve Virginia’s 8th District, is to introduce and pass a national carbon tax to combat climate change. I also promise to fight any efforts to “frack” for natural gas in the George Washington National Forest until and unless there is sufficient information on the ability to do it without environmental damage.
I’m a lifelong hiker and I’ve been fighting for our environment for many years. While I was in Switzerland, I authorized a carbon footprint assessment of the embassy, a first for any U.S. embassy. My wife, Megan, and I then worked to reduce that footprint by an additional 40 percent.
I also spearheaded the successful legislative effort to get a Virginia Appalachian Trail license plate. Funding from the program supports trail management and hiker outreach regarding safety and Leave No Trace ethics.
I hope you’ll be able to get outside to enjoy Virginia’s 8th District this Earth Day, but don’t forget that you can do your part to help protect our planet, all day, everyday.
